Atlanta Mid-Century Modern

A Truly Timeless Classic

During our April photography workshop in Atlanta, Wayne Capili, Fraser Almeida and I discovered one of the city’s finest examples of mid-century modern architecture. The ‘Ridgewood House’ became our second subject for exploration, offering our students an exceptional study in this architectural style.

True to mid-century modern principles, this home embodies the movement’s core philosophy: the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor living through thoughtful design. Nestled within a gated 1.02-acre property, the residence is approached through meticulously landscaped Japanese gardens, complete with mature foliage, boulders, and a koi pond that sets a contemplative tone.

Inside, the home reveals why mid-century design remains timeless. A central living room soars to 14-foot ceilings, its walls of glass dissolving boundaries between interior and landscape. Natural light floods through expansive panels, illuminating white maple floors and revealing sight lines that extend through dining room and den to the pool beyond. This transparency—so characteristic of the era—creates an environment where light becomes as important as any structural element.

The primary ensuite exemplifies the style’s embrace of nature, its glass walls opening directly to the pool where waterfalls provide both visual and auditory connection to water. Throughout, clean lines and natural materials create that distinctive mid-century harmony: sophisticated yet unpretentious, minimal yet warm.

For our students, this home offered an ideal canvas to implement the lessons they gleaned from the workshop. I hope you like these photos!
